1973: The Chicago Board Options Exchange opens for trading, with call options available on 16 U.S. common stocks. For the first time, stock options are listed on a dedicated exchange and registered for trading in standardized form, creating a "fair and orderly market." (Total volume on the first day: 911 contracts.)
